who the fuck moves from hoffman estates to state and 21st?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! plus I can think of three places off the topof my head in the city that are twice as better and NOT in the south loop.

i was going to get ian a gift certificate there for his birthday... but i don't even know if i should now. however, i will be going there sometime before thursday, with or without you guys, to buy some prince cds that rich doesn't have or only has on vinyl. if anyone wants to go--perhaps with a little indian food thrown in--i'll wait till the evening hours, as opposed to the late morning. except wednesday, which actually is my brother's birthday so i need to be with him.

Dare I argue for the fact that more music venues in this city is absolutely fucking refreshing?

I ain't gonna complain all that much, since they'll now be accessible from the CTA.

And Tim, please name those places that are better. I need more record stores to spend money at.

HiFi on Clark
reckless on Broadway (I know you dont like the attitudes there but who cares? Their selection is really really great)
Daves Records on Clark
Evil Clown on Lincoln
Dr Wax on Berwyn (branches of this place are awful but this one is great and the people are cool)
Jazz record mart (i know its in the north loop but....)
Hard Boiled Records on Roscoe
Crazy Man on Division (not the 'ugest selection but you WILL find nuggets of gold)

Fuck more music venues in the city, this leaves a huge void (cultural, musical et al) in the hoffman estates area which is such a soulless corporate void. I cant imagine growing up in that kind of overpriced, yet somehow malnourished wasteland. it was really the only thing young people in that area had. Chicago has enough, you know?

selah. I remember wind records on 95th when i was growing up being the promised land.

I understand that, Rich, and I would certainly agree with you...but something tells me they probably barely break even in Hoffman Estates, even if they do fill a desperately needed niche. Solely from an economic standpoint, especially since they intend to expand dramatically from what it sounds, moving to Chicago makes sense. From the list that Tim just posted for ignant ole me, though, they might be entering an already saturated market. And from every other standpoint, though (do remember that I grew up in a far more dire wasteland than any Chicago suburb)...yeah, it fucking blows, but their decision might spur someone to start another business to fill the void. All ain't lost here.

No all isn't lost, but I think it's the Johnny Carson syndrome, where after 17 years, therell be nothing but Jay Lenos filling the void.

D, the major difference (and I think it's key), is that where you grew up was dire, but being spolied was not a part of the problem. Hoffman (and that part of the world) is spolied, and quite lackadaisical, and Record Breakers was SOMETHING to stop the naval gazing, and give kids a place to go (as opposed to sit around and drink or take drugs, which they have plenty of $$$ for). Also, unlike most good record stores (ie Chicago Digital---also closer to the city) in the suburbs, it didnt fetishize the past. They always had the latest and freshest very obscure interesting labels. Record Breakers may have sold plenty of Fallout Boy CDs, but they used that to stock USA Is A Monster, Yellow Swans and Little Wings records, for which I was VERY greatful. In fact, every time I found out about a band I wanted to discover, they were the first place I'd go to.

And you know D, you have every reason to be optimistic, and maybe something great will come in, and I hate to disagree, but my instincts just tell me it's not the case.

The bland vast expanse of ther northern suburbs (they are north, right?) just lost its lighthouse.

On a less depressing note, Im burning vinyl to disc tonight, Falling Deep 4 will be out soon (at least not too long after we get back from Portland).
