On 9/11

Happy Birthday Deanna.

I think you're 24 this year, congratulations...

Remember 5 years ago (were we ever so young) I had just gotten back from seeing the White Stripes put on a fucking blistering transcendent show in St Louis, and you were either coming or going to see them again over the course of your birthday.

Outside of shows, that was such a down, dark time for me and becoming friends with you (I had never even spent more than 10 min with Liz at that point) was such welcome bright spot. You were so full of joy and excitement and genuine love of art and rock and roll, I was always thrilled to talk to you.

And now its a half decade later, and christ we've done so much together. We've crammed so much into what amounts in life to a very short time. My friendship with you has outlasted most of the "big names" of my past, and Im glad it has.

And look how far you've come...look at how much you've accomplished. Look at how much you've developed over the years. Who would have thought five years ago youd be living in Oak Park, dating a cool person and LIVING THE DREAM! And still...your basic character traits are still there, your unabashed guileless love for works of inspired creation, your honesty, your sincerity, your ability to listen to me talk and talk and talk...and all the other stuff like fussiness, narcissism and anal retentiveness. I'm kidding of course...but you knew I couldnt be that nice for that long! Anyway, Im glad I know you, (so is Liz) and I hope you have a wonderful day, and I cant wait to wish you happy 29th in 2011 (God willing and all that...wow bush will be out of office, the planet will be 80 degrees all the time...what a wonderful world)!

Happy Birthday D!

Shit, I knew I shouldn't have checked this from work--now I'm tearing up!

Thank you so much, Rich! (And I'll readily admit that I'm fussy, narcissistic, and anal retentive, but I wouldn't be me otherwise.)

Matt is taking me to Blind Faith tonight, I'll drink a soy shake in your honor. I will also call you tomorrow.

Did you know there's a town in Montana called "Big Sky"? I just learned that (from someone's expense report, of all places). That makes me happy.

rich can you tell us any interesting tidbits about johnny ace? I particularily love the two songs of his from fd4.

well tim, theres not much to tell. I found out about him because of all things Paul Simon wrote a song about him "The Late, Great Johnny Ace" and the name always stuck in my head. I would have been around 14 or so for reference. Flash forward a few years later to me buyign a Dylan bootleg and hearing Bob and Baez belt their way through Never Let Me Go and me tearing through my Dylan books to find out who wrote this incredible piece of music only to discover it was "the guy who Paul Simon wrote the song about". Now, understand I had tried to find records of his this entire time (and this is pre-internet as well), and itr wasnt till about 3 years after that that I found the only thing you can find, the vinyl pressing of a compilation of his material called The Johnny Ace Memorial Album (every copy Ive seen --all of five-- has been tattered and beaten beyond belief, when I found my copy it was in such an appalling state I considered not buying but only relented on account of how rare it is). I think its come out on CD since. Of all things, Johnny Knoxville named it as one of his favotire CDs. This comp was relased in 1974.

Johnny Ace was from Memphis, worked with the INCREDIBLE Big Mama Thornton, started recording I believe in 1952. Toured relentlessly, sang his heart out, recorded a grand total of approximately 25 songs including a two singles for Sun Records that never been released (???!!!).

Flash to New Years Eve 1954...Johnny is backstage at a concert, with his g/f, the g/f's friend, Big Mama Thornton and his manager, and Johnny has had a few and pulls out his gun and starts playing russian roullette. He aims at himslef and the chamber is empty, his g/f and the chamber is empty, the g/f's firend and the chamber is empty, back to himself, theres a bullet and he dies immediately. There were murder rumors but it seems to have as much validity as the ones that Lennon was killed by the CIA.

So, that is ALL I KNOW!

and Im glad you lvoe those songs, they are beyond captivating. You should hear his jump blues numbers, his band could fuckin groove and of course he had that beautiful voice.

happy birthday deanna!

24 is pretty badass, i should know, i've been 24 for about 4 months now.

Mr Bigpants Cock (of the) Walk said...

WHOA!!!!!!!!!!!!! wow, thats some shit!

I take it he did like background vocals for BMT?

Im gonna go back and listen with those things in mind.

meanwhile--if yr spit firin' : maybe you could share some history and personal stories about The Dells and The Chantels?

If any of this stuff was gonna make me leak and sob and drool and pull out my hair in beautiful misery it would no doubt be on account of The Chantels' 'Maybe'. As for The Dells--I think all their songs should be on Songs For Lovers. They could sing a song about how theyre watching the rigamortis spread on their lover's dead body after it fell from an eighty story building and still it would be a "song for lovers". you could make another compilation called "Songs for steamy hot dripping lovers and put all your favorite Dells songs.
if yr busy--I understand, we could talk later.

someone give me a good reason to not drop out of school

D said...

24 is a cool age, I hated being 23--it's so awkward, like being a baby deer on stilts.

Johnny Ace makes me so retardedly happy. I really need to pick up the CD version of "Memorial Album," since my LP is thin as paper. I'm surprised that, being "the first rock'n'roll suicide," or whatever the fuck he's been labelled, he's not better known.

D said...

Liz--if you drop out of school, you will end up working a miserable job like mine.

How's that?

Jackie said...

i just dropped out of school!

Mr Bigpants Cock (of the) Walk said...

do you have a bachelor's degree now? you should drop out then. you can always go back and finish where you left off if you need a higher degree for some position you'd like. Otherwise its like sitting in on a timeshare/pyramid scheme
lecture ten hours after you realized its a big scam.

Jackie said...

you know rich, i always thought you had very nice teeth. i mean from the two times i met you. i wish i had really nice teeth. just a thought. haha.

Richard said...

why thank you, jackie. what a nice thing to say. i actually have two very crooked teeth, one on the top row right in front, so whenever I smile I tip my head just a little but so no one can see it full on.

You know, I think your teeth are perfectly fine...what was wrong with them?

Jackie said...

oh there's nothing wrong with them actually. i never had to get braces or anything... i was lucky.

today is boring...somebody get something movin on here...talk about how you like to fuck goats or something.

and speaking of fucking goats my beloved burningangel is releasing the "The Burningangel Fucking Guide To Fucking" which looks to be nothing but good wholesome fun.

Deanna said...

I don't like goat fucking, but I have to agree about "Johanna's Guide to Humping," or whatever it's called now.

I was knitting on the train, and I got a LOT of weird looks. Hehe, this is gonna be awesome. Who wants a scarf for Xmas?

Deanna said...

Y'know, Dr. Laura was actually kinda hot at one point. I'm frightened.

Richard said...

Liz and I will each take a scarf, but I dont want no fruit fag colors...so make sure mine is like pink or yellow.

i think its actually called Johanna's Fucking Guide To Fucking. It looks awesome. Also awesome is the trailer for Cum On My Tattoo 2!

And hey, D answer my email!

Deanna said...

If I had the money, I would so be buying all the BA DVDs. I need more porn in my life.

que ferions-nous sans vous pour nous guider? said...

thanks for saying i'd like a scarf, hon. will you order for me the next time we go out for dinner? hahaha... j/k. well, since i was going to say i'd like one anyway, i'll go ahead and ask for a black one, since i asked katrin last christmas for one, and she made me a pink/yellow/orange one. and make it really soft, if possible. thanks!

i'm getting interested in cake decorating, and a manager at work (who used to be a pstry chef) said she'd give me free cake decorating lessons. so you might just get a cake!

Deanna said...

Yay! Cakes are awesome! Since we're taking orders, can you make it a vegan carrot cake?

The Hancock up by Matt's had black baby soft yarn on sale yesterday (I got some in pale pink and green to make scarves for my nieces). If I crash at his place tonight, I might just pick some up. I'm also gonna hit some thrift stores to find huge old sweaters to unravel, so maybe I'll find a black one. I love that knitting can accommodate recycling so well.
