I bought my ticket at work yesterday before the novocane wore off...and by the time I got home, I felt like shit. I'm glad it was an amazing show, Tim.
And while this doesn't entirely make up for my lack of Brotzmannship, the Vandermark 5 is playing tonight and tomorrow at the Green Mill. I'm going tonight.
No, they didn't give me shit...and even if they had, I wouldn't have taken it. I got through the day on 2 Advil, and I didn't even like taking that.
This is now the second time I've missed Brotzmann. One day he WILL play on a night that I haven't just had a root canal or that I'm not traveling with someone underage, dammit!
FLORENCE, Colo. - John Walker Lindh, serving a 20-year sentence after fighting for the Taliban in Afghanistan, has been transferred to Supermax, the federal government's most secure prison, authorities said Thursday.
Lindh was moved to the facility about 90 miles south of Denver in February for security reasons, said Isidro Garcia, a spokesman for the federal Bureau of Prisons. Garcia said he had no other information.
Lindh's transfer was first reported on Newsweek.com. He had been held at a medium-security federal penitentiary in Victorville, Calif.
Lindh was captured in November 2001 by American forces sent to topple the Taliban after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. He was charged with conspiring to kill Americans and support terrorists but pleaded guilty to lesser charges, including carrying explosives for the Taliban government.
Lindh has served 4 1/2 years. His attorneys have applied to President Bush to commute his sentence after Australian David Hicks was sentenced to less than a year in prison last month for aiding terrorism.
Supermax houses some of the nation's most notorious inmates, including Unabomber Theodore Kaczynski, Oklahoma City bombing coconspirator Terry Nichols and Olympic Park bomber Eric Rudolph.
i was home, jackie, but i was in the bathroom. and there's one thing i will not do while talking to people on the phone... and that is use the bathroom.

tim will yell out "is anyone here from kentucky?!" haha.... ok just kidding. i'll keep my cell phone on vibrate and ring, so hopefully, if i can't hear it, at least i'll feel it. and if it's cold enough i might wear my new pink tweed coat.
i'm still aching.... and i hardly moved! i slept for 10 hours and could have kept sleeping. does that explain anything? but the show was a-w-e-s-o-m-e. and the crowd, with exception of one dude in the front, was completely cool. rich will tell you about that guy, cuz iggy pointed him out and about four guys had to take him out.

how can they claim the virginia tech shootings as "the worst mass shooting in us history"?
here you go:
Bear River Massacre January 29th, 1863, Col. Patrick Connor leads a regiment killing at least 200 Indian men, women and children near Preston, Idaho.
Gunther Island Massacre, February 26th, 1860, At least 100 Wiyot Indians, mostly women and children, are slaughtered by white settlers in Humboldt County, California, during one of three simultaneous assaults on the Wiyot
Bloody Island Massacre Spring 1850, The murder of up to 200 Pomo people on an island near Upper Lake, California by Nathaniel Lyon and his U. S. Army detachment, in retribution for the killing of two Clear Lake settlers who had been abusing and murdering Pomo people.
Wounded Knee Massacre, December 29th 1890, Around 300 Sioux men, women and children are massacred by US soldiers at Wounded Knee, South Dakota.
Marias Massacre, January 23rd, 1870, White Americans slaughter 173 Piegans, mainly women, children and the elderly.
what are you stupid? they were INDIANS, they dont count! and anyway it doesnt matter what happened over 50 years ago, its all equaled out now that they have casinos.
"A Sudanese man has been forced to take a goat as his "wife", after he was caught having sex with the animal. The goat's owner, Mr Alifi, said he surprised the man with his goat and took him to a council of elders.
They ordered the man, Mr Tombe, to pay a dowry of 15,000 Sudanese dinars ($50) to Mr Alifi.
"We have given him the goat, and as far as we know they are still together," Mr Alifi said.
Mr Alifi, of Hai Malakal in Upper Nile State, told the Juba Post newspaper that he heard a loud noise around midnight on 13 February and immediately rushed outside to find Mr Tombe with his goat.
"When I asked him: 'What are you doing there?', he fell off the back of the goat, so I captured and tied him up."
Mr Alifi then called elders to decide how to deal with the case.
"They said I should not take him to the police, but rather let him pay a dowry for my goat because he used it as his wife," Mr Alifi told the newspaper."
And not to pick nits, but I do think that the media is making a distinction between the above massacres, which were either militarily-orchestrated or otherwise committed by groups, and the one at Virginia Tech, which was committed by an individual and considered a spree. In that regard, they are correct, even if their description is misleading.
If anything, I'm not agreeing with corporate media. I'm just clarifying something that I wish they were the ones articulating.
If anything, more people died in Iraq yesterday than in the entire state of Virginia. Surely that's something the corporate media can't get increased ad revenues with--it's not a touchy-feely story like a Holocaust survivor giving his life to allow his students an additional 30 seconds to escape, or a young man throwing furniture in front of a door to block it. The war doesn't bring in viewers anymore because it pisses everyone off, so every member of the media is probably THRILLED that they have something else to bury that story with, something with faces that are identifiably American--and by proxy, to them and to many of us, identifiably human. And that utter contempt for the "foreign" is something, regardless of semantics, that I can never agree with.
I know you were just making a snarky remark, Jackie, so don't think I'm pissy or picking a fight. I'm just going on another angry, tangential rants about my sheer, intense hatred for the media.
Oh, and I'm also waiting for the anti-immigration crowd to start using this shooting as a whipping boy. I've got my barf bag ready.
Ornette, Mavis, AND Jack and Meg? Man, even with all the typical lameness, Bonnaroo is looking kinda good right now compared to some of those other festivals...
this fucking world, man.....one of the last and true simple pleasures of life is going away forever faster than I can type this. Once again I took a walk to a music store and once again it is g-g-g-gone. I dont know why this shocks me every time. RIP Evil clown 1991-2007. the thing is it was in full working order just this past saturday. fuck fuck fuck fuck fuscin shit god damn fuck
naw evil clown's gone just like the rest will be by like september. thats an old site from when when they moved from boys town to lincoln square. there is actually a little sign on the door now that says "rip evil clown."
Don't tell me you've heard of other stores that are about to close...though I could just use it as an excuse to buy more records to help keep places afloat a little bit longer.
I also walked past the new Loop outpost of Reckless, and it's tiny. I don't think that venture's going to last much longer, but who knows?
YOu know, Ive been doing a little research on the web and it seemsthis is mostly a chicago problem (?!?)
I know that around 1998-2000 the Daley people were (for some reason) fighting to close records stores (2nd hand tunes in evanston almost went under). Maybe they finally suceeeded? Maybe the % of people buying shit online made the difference?
Outside of chicago, LA seems to be in the same boat as us. So, what the fuck is going on?
In the future are people like, not going to have stereos? Are "record stores just going to be mail order? Are CDs going to die completely or become cult items like vinyl is now? It all seems so unrealistic and needless and FUCKING STUPID.
Theyre all closing: Hi-Fi on clark is gone, Dr Wax on Berwyn is gone, Crazy Man on division is gone, evil clown of course is gone, Record emporium on pauina is cut in half (and really now just a holding cell with piles of crap everywhere until they get a Uhall truck and theyll be gone)and someone told me Rolling stone is closing soon
i guess it's a good thing i've never been blessed in living in a city with good record stores, so i don't have to be concerned about losing them. sorry guys!
Wait, isn't Dr. Wax now in the Berwyn Red Line stop building? Or did their new location close, too?
I guess I'll be making some special record-buying trips after this weekend is over. Anyone care to join me? We should totally do a marathon of remaining Chicago record stores.
For many years on either the 3rd or 4th of July, PK and I would leave the house at around 8am and hit as many record stores as we could in 708, 312, 773 and 847.
We would get home around 11 at night and the trunk of his car would always be several inches closer to the ground. Those are still some of the best days i remember.
ummm..... if you changed that to the following sat/sun, i could go with you. that's the last weekend before my finals are due. i'm probably going to be living in the darkroom that weekend. oh, and it would have to be on a saturday as i always work on sunday. but where are we goign to go? it sounds like from time that everywhere we went is now closed.
Okay, now CNN DID just say that the VT thing was the worst mass killing by gunfire in modern history, which is really inaccurate. The guy who said it is named Don Lemon. Let's all laugh!
the place in forest park is the one that is never open when we want to go there--even if the business hours sign says it's supposed to be open. so, we can try for it but i doubt it will be open.

TMT's story on Johnny Cash's house burning down is awesome. I had thought of that, but I didn't want to say it out loud. I should have.
And in case anyone's bored, Popmatters has an excellent essay up on the Imus scandal.
I always thought Imus was a jagoff, and Im shocked it took him this long to get canned.

Part of me is really dreading this weekend...
Ornette Coleman is playing Bonnaroo???
well, tim, i forgot the negative of the image i wanted, so i practiced using a different negative. it's a really cool one, but i didn't get it quite right. but i guess it was alright that i didn't have the right negatives because i would have had nothing inwhich to transport the finished prints. maybe this weekend i will have a chance to finish... otherwise, it'll have to wait till my projects are done. i'm trying to get summer access to the darkroom, but since they cancelled the only photo class of the summer session, it's looking pretty bleak.

The goat conversation, that is. Goats rule.

Theyre all closing: Hi-Fi on clark is gone, Dr Wax on Berwyn is gone, Crazy Man on division is gone, evil clown of course is gone, Record emporium on pauina is cut in half (and really now just a holding cell with piles of crap everywhere until they get a Uhall truck and theyll be gone)and someone told me Rolling stone is closing soon
christ.
christ for sure!
i guess it's a good thing i've never been blessed in living in a city with good record stores, so i don't have to be concerned about losing them. sorry guys!
Wait, isn't Dr. Wax now in the Berwyn Red Line stop building? Or did their new location close, too?
I guess I'll be making some special record-buying trips after this weekend is over. Anyone care to join me? We should totally do a marathon of remaining Chicago record stores.
yeah, Im in. It's on.
For many years on either the 3rd or 4th of July, PK and I would leave the house at around 8am and hit as many record stores as we could in 708, 312, 773 and 847.
We would get home around 11 at night and the trunk of his car would always be several inches closer to the ground. Those are still some of the best days i remember.
the berwyn stop dr wax reopened then REclosed in about the time it takes to get from Howard to Jackson
Goddamn. For a city that claims to love music, we sure don't know how to keep it here.
April 28 or 29 for our extravaganza, then?
yeah.
lets aim for the 28th. liz usually works on sundays
ummm..... if you changed that to the following sat/sun, i could go with you. that's the last weekend before my finals are due. i'm probably going to be living in the darkroom that weekend. oh, and it would have to be on a saturday as i always work on sunday. but where are we goign to go? it sounds like from time that everywhere we went is now closed.
theres daves, evanston 2nd hand, reckless, whats left of the emporium, whatsleft of rolling stones, and so forth.
I can wait until the following weekend...that's after I get paid again.
Well, we could go to:
Second Hand Tunes
Chicago Digital
Oak Park Records
Deadwax
Vintage Vinyl
DAVE'S
Jazz Record Mart?
I say we avoid Reckless, as much as I love them, and stick to the places in greater danger. Anyone else got any suggestions?
Or we could go to Reckless...
do we wanna check out recordbreakers in the south loop?
yeah we do want to check that liz. and d, knock that question mark off of jazz record mart. we'll hit that.
did anyone else know that rue mcclanahan is vegan? that's pretty cool!
i'm not gonna take the time to make the link. cut and paste people! you gotta see this dog.

Is the new Record Breakers open yet?
I want Rue's autobiography. She's fucking awesome.
you should also check out dusty grooves on ashland and division. they have many things you find nowhere else.
aren't you coming with us, tim?
There's also a record store in Forest Park on Madison that I've noticed.
I'm constantly near Ashland and Division. Why have I never seen this place before???
oh yeah ive always wanted to go to the forest park one.
we should make an itinerary. seriously. d, call me we'll work on that.
Also, jackie is joining us!
Yeah, we can start in the western suburbs and work our way northeast. It'll be amazing. I'll call you next week to plan that.

Okay, now CNN DID just say that the VT thing was the worst mass killing by gunfire in modern history, which is really inaccurate. The guy who said it is named Don Lemon. Let's all laugh!
the place in forest park is the one that is never open when we want to go there--even if the business hours sign says it's supposed to be open. so, we can try for it but i doubt it will be open.
yeah we'll have to plan around it
