[jeez Id hate to become 'The Memorializing Guy' But] It appears THE GREAT ELASTIC AUTONOMOUS COMPOSER-PIANIST ANDREW HILL died last week of cancer. The only musician that had better timing than Hill was maybe Miles Davis (but Andrew probably waited on/for notes even longer than Miles could ever stand to).
He created full organisms with his music. I can listen to something with him on it--put it on the shelf--return to it later and it will present itself in a fully shifted form. The stuff is very much alive. If my brain was the center of the universe then it would have created solids, liquids, gases and Andrew Hill. (and werner herzog too, probably. [knock on wood, jinx, boing flip, you owe me a coke])

If you are unfamiliar with the amazing work of the amazing Andrew Hill, I suggest picking up one of my favorites which include: Dance With Death, Passing Ships, Judgement, Compulsion, Invitation

If anyone is interested: Steve Cushing's wonderful Saturday night radio show(which is actually sunday morning 12:00am-4:00am) 'Blues Before Sunrise' found a new home. I dont know how long ago but I just found out today. It was the ever piss-gargling decision by the ever shit-sucking Chicago Public Radio 91.5fm (wbez) to drop his show in January and forego any and all cultural substance on their station so that they could provide listeners with around the clock coverage of more shows to discuss just how much of a bad man George Bush really is.
I guess thats what "liberal" means?

anyway, Steve Cushing, who broadcasts out of his home in Forest Park every Saturday night can now be heard by chicagoans once again on 90.9fm. It is good for dancing yr ass off for 4 hours if youve got it in you and learn a shit load too; the guy is sickeningly informative and ecstatic about presenting you with his selected "sides". You should really really really try it once, youll be hooked!

thanks tim, I;ll check it out. I just have to remember

rich do you know if Chicago Digital has closed permanently? Ive been calling them for two days and I am sent straight to an ambiguous answering machine.

Richard said...

wow, i have no idea. i kinda stopped going there around early 2004. The rat face guy who i Always disliked seemed was there EVERY time i went and i just got SICK of him making fun of every CD i bought and answering simple non-stupid questions with answers like his famous "Hmmmph, I wouldnt know I dont bother with rock music, i know some people like Rock music, but thats not what i listen t, i stopped listening to rock music in 1965" tirade which he'd deliver pretty much verbatim, every time. Also, they fired the girl who looked like a super attractive version of Patti Smith and had an encyclopedic knowledge of miles davis, sun ra as well as rolling stones + dylan bootlegs. AND Chris the owner who was always cool & helpful & smart started being a dick when i innocently inquired about Neil Young bootlegs not once, not twice but three different times! Yeah dude Ive been buying bootlegs at $80 a pop since 19 fucking 94 and you cant answer my question about where I could find the original version of "Like An Inca"? I'm totally a RIAA narc and after a decade plus you sussed me out. Great work Sherlock. AND AND AND to add insult to injury the last two times i went there (to pick up something id ordered and they had to ship in) I got ticketed (for SERIOUSLY bullshit reasons wich for the sake of space i wont go into). So umm yeah. Also i hate to say this, I mean ethically this is an AWFUL thing to say, but fuck, why would I spend $120 for a 3 cd John Lennon bootleg and get made fun of for it, when i can download that shit for free, (inclduing the cover art)?

I walked past there about five or six months ago, and it looked like it was still open then...I can always take the blue line home and check it out tonight. I'll report back soon.

Richard said...

yeah we drove by it not long ago (a few weeks) and it looked open...i cant believe i didnt add that, haha

Deanna said...

Okay, I can now confirm that Chicago Digital is still open, and shows no signs of closing anytime soon.

so, does anyone know if recordbreakers is open yet? their website still says their in hoffman estates and no new number is listed (that i saw, i didn't look very hard as i have been in the darkroom since 9pm--yes, it's 5am).

Jackie said...

jeez liz, i can barely stay up past midnight anymore. good luck with your school stuff.

guess who got maude season one on dvd for my b-day? ohhh yeah.

D said...

I hope Liz is now in bed! Good lord, I'd forgotten about all-nighters...I'm definitely never going back to school!

Okay, so I have expanded my neighborhood choices for my apartment search. I wasn't finding much sticking around the Ukrainian Village.

D said...

OMG I think I just found my dream apartment.

que ferions-nous sans vous pour nous guider? said...

that looks pretty nice, d. you won't be far from kate or tim if you live there. i know you want to live near the empty bottle, but are apartments near the music box or anything else too expensive? i mean, i wouldn't mind living next door to the music box!

oh yeah, finally went to sleep at 6 am to 11.... not like i haven't done that for work i was doing at home, so not so bad. uic is actually kind of pretty at 5:30 in the morning.

D said...

Whoo, right by the Music Box is pretty pricey. I like Lincoln Square, because there are two 24-hour busses that run right by the Empty Bottle, so I'd never have to worry about getting to the brown line on time. I'm going to look at it tomorrow.

Mr Bigpants Cock (of the) Walk said...

theres a really nice park right there too called Winnemac which is great for reading. But it would be quite a long walk to the brown line. BUT youd be real close to the Metra station which would be far better as brown line construction intensifies and delays worsen.

MIRAH!

Logan Square Auditorium, 2563 N. Kedzie 9 pm

Jackie said...

i might as well move down there by then, since i'll be driving back and forth all summer for shows.

D said...

It wouldn't be that far a walk, it's actually really close to the Damen station. Or I could take the Lawrence bus to the Red Line, but that would defeat the purpose. I probably would just take the Metra to work eventually.

MIRAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
