There is fraud and there is clear perception. Where your instincts fall determines your consciousness. What answer is good enough for you?

No, we can't adjust. This is a situation that can't be argued with. A complete human rescue mission? Yes.

And theres this, can it possible be related to the above?

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

so heres i guess what happens when the people who run the war also run record companies, write copyright laws, control radio stations. Ftom tiny mix tapes...

"Start driving to your local used CD store now, with Insane Clown Posse albums in tow, because certain states are whispering back and forth about the pleasures of cracking down on resale shops in the future. Florida and Utah have already passed second-hand-goods legislation in a joint effort to lessen the sales of stolen goods and scare away all customers. In Florida, new laws now require little Timmy to submit thumb-prints and state-issued ID before exchanging his Marcy Playground CD-single for store credit — no cash allowed. The stores themselves must apply for a permit and are required to keep traded CDs for 30 days before reselling them. Rhode Island is considering similar legislation, and as the National Association of Recording Merchandisers’ outside council John Mitchell said, "There seems to be some sort of a new trend among states to support second-hand-goods legislation."

This is not the first time the music industry has pressured lawmakers to threaten the used CD market; major labels have often withheld cooperative advertising from stores that purchase from them directly while still dealing in resale. However, this has angered consumers and independent stores alike, leading to a Federal Trade Commission investigation of illegal practices within the industry in the mid-’90s. Since then, used CD sales have gone from 5% to nearly 10-20% of total CD revenue.

Beyond triggering a mass exodus from resale shops, these new laws may also be conflicting with slightly lesser-known documents, such as the U.S. Constitution. CD resale is protected by the First Amendment (those Fathers thought of everything, man), and the use of fingerprinting and collecting IDs could be seen as further violations. Existing copyright laws also allow individuals to legally resell CDs."

see why they dont need censorship battles anymore?

and we dont need food

and we dont need privacy

and we dont need freedom.

Thanks!

and on ONE DAY satan's laughingstock vetoed the war bill, proposed some great new wiretapping ideas and washed it all down by appearing on american idol to thank the public and those delightful corporations, oh and BONO (yes, fucking bono, im so fucking glad you exist bono, not only is your music the most creative genius wildfire ever set ablaze, but youve saved so many lives, i mean if you die for us itll be perfect. can you work on dying for us?) for shelling out and shilling up to save those poor, poor african of africa and the poor poor african children of america. AIDS is a problem both here and there. So the best thing is to be publicly against any form of birth control. The environment is a porblem here and there. So well, do i really need to continue? Oh, and that WAR is great for the environment. And humanity and poor children. Oh the children. So what about Iraqi children? What about Iranian children? Shouldnt we be helping them too? So they dont grow up to be terrorists? Or something? But fuck that he told a lil joke. And Laura "Joker-Face" Bush ribbed him a lil. Fun!

The problem used to be people didnt realize they were being manipulated. The differnece now is people realize theyre being manipulated but are either convinced they are powerless, or simply dont care. Pathetic!

I am saying this to you so pay fucking attention---

Your little personal traumas are meaningless.

Your little petty pissant problems with presentation are MEANINGLESS.

What matters is the physical/psychic energy you contribute. Otherwise you are more DEADWEIGHT dragging the human race down. So dont be so self righteous and self involved. Quit creating neat little distractions for yourself to keep occupied and off the radar.

NOT TRUE, GENERALIZATION

Richard said...

Ok, fair enough.

i should clarified what i mean. what im saying is ALOT of people in this country create traumas that arent traumas at all in order to keep themselves from accomplishing or contributing anything. And if one calls them on it they can say "you dont understand, youre not sensitive et al.

The truth is most people in this country have various problems of various degrees but not Serious fucking problems let alone traumas, and to be more concerned with navel gazing, and worse to user an excuse that you're "Screwed up" is lazy and totally reprehnseible. Join the human race, as a great man once said.

So...is a guy's emotions whos upset his wife died of cancer meaningless? Of course not! But thats not what i was talking about. He can afford to feel bad cuz what he went through was real. But i know dozens (im sure you do to) who are un-real. thats what im talking about.

So, thanks fior bringing that up tim. Hopefully Ive hashed it out a little better here.

I like bees, and I want to fight to keep them from going extinct. They are an important part of our ecosystem. Bees pollinate plants and we eat their biproducts. Birds don't produce honey, and they shouldn't have all of the pollination weight placed on them. SAVE THE BEES, ASSHOLES!

Richard said...

Einstein said that if bees were extinct thered e no human life within 4 years.

D said...

So I guess our music buying binge is well-timed, then? Just make sure you listen to everything within the next four years, since we'll all be dead!

Well, except Rich, because he's immortal.

Richard said...

one final ntoe of clarification: it doesnt matter that your girlfriend broke up with you when we kill hundreds of people every day in iraq, and imprson people w/o cuase all across the globe. People are on behavior modifying psychological drugs and their biggest complaint is about having to drive all the way to the bank befre work (this isnt a random example this is truth, i work with this person). In the face of whats happening in the world their little "traumas" are meaningless. fuckin big time. so, yeah. Have a beautiful day everyone who reads this. WEAR YOUR LOVE LIKE HEAVEN.

well i was gonna tell you all know why i'm so happy today (other than the fact that the semester is over), but now i'm not so happy anymore. i heard about this on bill maher and it is really scary. maybe i should get my aunt to start breeding bees...

D said...

Well, why are you so happy, Liz?

Even though the world is shit, we should rejoice in the positive things that happen in our lives while still working to make the world better. That's the only way we're all gonna change things. SO SHARE!

I'm starting to think that beekeeping might be a fine career choice, if only people would stop using their cell phones so damn much.

Richard said...

D youre completely right. Liz share yr happiness!

Jackie said...

liz, what kind of peppers do you use when you make salsa? i'm gonna make some tommorow and i know we had a discussion about how jalapenos are not spicy, so what do you use?

Jackie said...

is it wrong for me to be sad that people know who beth ditto is now? and that she is popular? i really would like her all to myself.

D said...

People know who Beth is? I never thought I'd see the day. Weird. I remember when she wasn't all fancy and stuff.

que ferions-nous sans vous pour nous guider? said...

i made a backdated post! look below!

que ferions-nous sans vous pour nous guider? said...

oh, and i use either serrano peppers or RED jalapenos. green jalapenos are kind of sweet, whereas red ones are much hotter. the thing with peppers is that the redder, thinner, or smaller they get... the hotter they tend to be. habeneros are short, "fat" and orange--the hottest in the world. not to mention the tastiest! but don't use those in a salsa because they can give up to 3rd degree burns if they're potent enough. i say use serranos. they're green (although i think i've seen red, can't remember thoguh). habeneros are more chili-territory. or sweet salsa-territory, like mango habenero salsa (mmmmm)

que ferions-nous sans vous pour nous guider? said...

tim, if you can, make an itinerary for us, please. thanks. also, would you like to have breakfast that morning at moondance? i figure the stores won't be open till about 10, so we'll head out then. just let rich and me know when you can.

Jackie said...

thanks for the jalapeno advice.

and im sorry i cant attend on saturday. not sure if anyone is really dissapointed besides me, haha.

D said...

Okay, guys, let's start making an official itinerary.

We've got (and I'm pulling these from the Centerstage list):
Beverly Rare Record Shop (?)
Chicago Digital
Chicago Rock (has anyone been here? I know I've walked past it)
Coop's Underground
Crazy Man
Dave's
Deadwax
Discus (? I've never heard of this place)
Dusty Groove
George's
Gramaphone
Hard Boiled
Hyde Park
Jazz Record Mart
Old School
Permanent (?)
Reckless
Record Emporium
Rolling Stones
Second Hand Tunes
Val's Halla
Vintage Vinyl
Wax Addict

Any suggestions for additions/subtractions?

D said...

Oh yeah, Oak Park Records.

Richard Millett said...

Gosh gee...we're gonna need a map! And Discus is still around? I haven tbeen there since i dated kristen. i dont even remember where it was, haha.

D said...

Well, I don't think that Centerstage list is all that up-to-date. I'm sure Tim can help fill in any gaps.

D said...

http://www.newcitychicago.com/chicago/5812.html

Mr Bigpants Cock (of the) Walk said...

yeah the centerstage list is fucked.
crazy man: closed
deadwax:sucks
grammaphone: su su sucks
rock records: also kind of sucks
Beverly Records: I thik its all latino and way way out of the way.

D said...

Deadwax is small, but I did find a new copy of Arc for $7. That was about all I found, though, but the owner was really nice.

Since we're having a proper restaurant breakfast, should we pack sandwiches and juice boxes? We don't need lunch slowing us down!

D said...

So now we're down to:

Chicago Digital
Coop's Underground
Dave's
Discus
Dusty Groove
George's
Hard Boiled
Hyde Park
Jazz Record Mart
Oak Park
Old School (I forgot that this is the one in Forest Park that's never open, I should probably remove it too)
Permanent
Reckless
Record Emporium
Rolling Stones
Second Hand Tunes
Val's Halla
Vintage Vinyl
Wax Addict

Mr Bigpants Cock (of the) Walk said...

places I think we should definitely check out include but are not limited to: any oak park stores, dusty grooves(ashland and division), reckless in the loop(the one in the loop--only because Ive heard they stocked up their wherehouse with tons
of good shit exclusively for this store, omitting the other two. so this place may not be very picked over, jazz record mart(state and Illinois), Daves Records (near clark and fullerton), theres a place on roscoe and lincoln that might be worth checking, vintage vinyl in evanston and theres always Laurie's planet of sound in my neighborhood (lincoln and leland)

D said...

I was about to ask about which specific Reckless location. I still haven't been there, and it's not too far from Jazz Record Mart.

The place on Roscoe and Lincoln is Record Emporium, right? I always see that when I'm at the Music Exchange.

Richard said...

can i just interject how excited i am by all this talk?

and even more excited that im not planning it?

KEEP UP THE WONDERFUL WORK EVERYONE!!!

Mr Bigpants Cock (of the) Walk said...

no record emporium is on lincoln and paulina.

Mr Bigpants Cock (of the) Walk said...

btw, thanks coach

Mr Bigpants Cock (of the) Walk said...

sorry, the unnamed roscoe place is actually on damen and roscoe

Mr Bigpants Cock (of the) Walk said...

Wax Addict is out unless anybody needs to pick up some new breakbeats for the party their spinning on saturday night.

D said...

According to Google maps, that appears to be Hard Boiled Records.

D said...

New list:

Chicago Digital
Coop's Underground
Dave's
Discus
Dusty Groove
George's
Hard Boiled
Hyde Park
Jazz Record Mart
Laurie's
Oak Park
Permanent
Reckless
Record Emporium
Rolling Stones
Second Hand Tunes
Val's Halla
Vintage Vinyl

Mr Bigpants Cock (of the) Walk said...

does anyone know if hyde park records is worth hitting since its quite removed from any path we could create?

D said...

Um, I know it used to be a Second Hand Tunes? But we can knock it off the list. Hyde Park still scares me anyway.

D said...

Once we've got the list whittled down, we can then organize it by neighborhood and I can start making maps.

Mr Bigpants Cock (of the) Walk said...

yr call. but if it used to be a 2nd hand, we might be better off omitting it and hitting the 2nd hand in Evanson (chicago and dempster) on the way to vintage vinyl. Plus, regarding hyde park records, LSD south traffic is really fucked these days due to construction.

Mr Bigpants Cock (of the) Walk said...

I just called 'Coops Underground' and the line is disconnected. does anyone know if its still open?

D said...

Chicago Digital (Oak Park)
Coop's Underground (this one's pretty out of the way, too)

Permanent (Ukrainian Village)
Reckless (Loop)
Record Emporium (Lakeview)
Rolling Stones (Norridge)
Second Hand Tunes (Evanston)
Val's Halla (Oak Park)
Vintage Vinyl (Evanston)

Mr Bigpants Cock (of the) Walk said...

dude, you dont have to take deadwax off the list if you think its a worthy hit. and yr right the owner IS very kind. Plus we'e gonna drive right past it between Record Emporium and Lauries. yr call.

Mr Bigpants Cock (of the) Walk said...

what is George's?

D said...

I have no idea, it was just on their list.

D said...

Chicago Digital (Oak Park)

D said...

Should I also find out each store's hours so we can plan accordingly? I'll probably be here late tonight anyway, so I'm sure I can find pockets of time to call or hit their websites.

Mr Bigpants Cock (of the) Walk said...

Ive actually called the ones with hours Im not familiar with and the earliest any of them closed was 8pm. Theyre all generally 8pm except for vintage vinyl which closes at 6pm

D said...

Awesome! Thanks Tim!

So what shape do we want our path to make? I'm shooting for hexagons myself.

Mr Bigpants Cock (of the) Walk said...

it would be impressive if you could pull off a Dodecahedron.

D said...

Can someone who drives tell me if this is a good pecking order?

Chicago Digital (Oak Park)
Oak Park (Oak Park)
Val's Halla (Oak Park)

I feel like this is where liz comes in. she should get the locations and decide her fate. I am guessing that liz will be driving.

Mr Bigpants Cock (of the) Walk said...

btw, Liz, yes I'm gonna join you at moondance. I am getting a ride out to oak park. If the restaurant isnt in oak park perhaps you could pick me up on yr way to picking up D. I can get there as early as 9am.

D said...

You could always have them drop you off at my place, Tim.

Jackie said...

why aren't you online rich? come....talk.... to.... me.

your record trip is sounding like fun. too bad i can't partake.

Ok, Rich hasnt been online, or saying much here for a good fucking reason. Yesterday afternoon I got a very very very bad migraine and i ended up only getting around 3 and a half very scattered hours of sleep. I slept today from 11:15 to around 4:10. I feel much better. And i can exercise tonight which i couldnt do last night and really pissed me off.

Richard said...

also thank you so much d and tim for your hard work. seriously you have no idea how thankful i am

D said...

No problem...I'm glad you're feeling better, Rich!

I still need an idea of what route we're taking, since I was hoping to print out maps before I left work today. Where's Liz?

Jackie said...

i hope you guys are having fun today!

guess what? my friends threw me a surprise birthday party last night... so i guess it's a good thing that i didn't come to chicago. it was glorious and made me so happy.

Deanna said...

Dammit, I left my stuff from Chicago Digital in your car, Rich. (Considering that I was digging that stuff out after dark, that's not too bad.)

THE DAMAGE:
17 CDs
8 LPs
1 DVD
$284.17 (plus what I bought at Chicago Digital, so my $300 estimate was very close)

That was fucking awesome. Thanks guys! We really should do that again soon.

que ferions-nous sans vous pour nous guider? said...

well, maybe not "soon" or we'll all end up in debt! but again sometime, maybe in the fall? and jackie, i'm so glad the party turned out well!!! sarah sent me messages about it when she found out that you were planning on coming down here. that's why i was trying to get you to want to come down another weekend! so i'm happy for you!

i'll have to check out Q. i'm always a fan of a sweaty beth ditto. rawr.

Mr Bigpants Cock (of the) Walk said...

There still looks like theres a lot of talk online of IE coming out in june. though i couldnt find a date--but its Rhino who's releasing it. But Jackie you should really see it on a big screen! according to the movie's website, its coming back to chicago on May 18. I know I'M down to see it again... I jsut dont know what theatre its gonna be at.

Also: if anyones curious about Lynch's visit to the musicbox when it first premiered: you can find footage (including the Q&A!!!) at the inland empire website.

Jackie said...

yeah i would like to see it and i know i'm coming down to chicago the first weekend of june, maybe it will still be there by then?

Richard said...

Hey everyone. I hope you all recovered. It was a wonderful day, I had a blast. Thank you for attending & being lovely, and to those who didnt attend (you know who you are Miss Wiss) we love you anyway.

As for doing it again, yes sure id love to...but this time im goin on the budget plan!

Although its likely that noone is thinking about buying music right now chek this out: the virgin megastore is selling a boxset of the first seven Sly & the family Stone albums which have all been remastered with at least 5 bonus tracks added to each on sale for $55.

Richard said...

yeah, not a bad deal by any stretch. I was actually gonna buy it at dusty grooves, but for some reason forgot to.

D said...

I also just bought airfare. So I really don't want to think about buying records right now.

But I might just have to think about that one.

By the way, the new Mary Timony is a bit of a stinker. It definitely has its near-transcendent moments, though...but those are almost entirely negated by the poorly written feminist ra-ra stuff. I guess she was feeling the Kathleen void a little too strongly.

Richard said...

mary timony wrote feminist ra-ra stuff? wow, even if its lousy i kinda want to check that out

D said...

I think it was just one song. Keep in mind that this is just my impression after the first listen, and it may well grow on me.

She does use "Keep your laws off my body" as a lyric, though.

Richard said...

Wow...read this...

The infamous Kent State shootings may have happened over 37 years ago, but for those who were present during this grim chapter in American history-- or indeed any who seek truth above all-- justice has not yet been served. The question remains why National Guardsmen fired upon student protesters-- and by-standers-- that fateful May 4, whether they had any good reason to do so, and who made the order that left four dead in Ohio.

To help answer these questions and more, a Kent State survivor dedicated to the ongoing investigation has called upon the expertise of an indie superman: Ian Mackaye of Fugazi/Minor Threat/Embrace/Evens/Dischord/etc. fame.

As noted on Idolator.com today and originally reported by the Akron Beacon Journal on May 2, Mackaye recently "analyzed [a] recording" taken on reel-to-reel by Kent State student Terry Strubbe the day of the shootings.

On this recording-- the only one known to exist that includes the complete 13 seconds of gunfire-- one can allegedly hear a National Guard officer giving the order: "Right here. Get set. Point. Fire."

The muffled recording was presented to Mackaye by Alan Canfora, who was wounded in the shootings and now runs the richly informative Kent May 4 Center, a "non-profit educational charity" that "seek[s] to provide information for students, scholars, researchers and news media."

Mackaye and Canfora met when Fugazi played a May 4 Center benefit back in the 1990s, according to a representative from Dischord. While confirming Mackaye's involvement, he downplayed the label co-founder's "analysis."

"Ian is not a forensic audio expert," the Dischord rep wrote in an e-mail to Pitchfork, "but has access to professional audio equipment. From my understanding, Ian's role was simply to boost the volume of the tape so Canfora could decide whether or not to look into further analysis."

While "Ian Mackaye: Forensic Audio Expert" has a slightly cooler ring to it than "Ian Mackaye: Dude with Audio Equipment", we're thrilled all the same that Mr. Mackaye is lending his talents to yet another worthy enterprise.

Jackie said...

that's pretty amazing.

D said...

Rich, I can't believe you still read Pitchfork.

Speaking of which, all the intense excitement about the new Bjork record culminating in a negative review was pretty fascinating. So that must mean the record is astounding.

Richard said...

yeah i read one article. amazing.

Richard said...

funny, tinymix loves the bjork record.

D said...

TMT also liked the Avey Tare backwards record. And their Bjork review totally predicted exactly what "P4K" was going to say. It made me love them even more.

I watched We Jam Econo last night. It made me deliriously happy. Once I recover from the binge, I'm getting the rest of their stuff.

Richard said...

that movie has actually choked me up pretty seriously, twice.

It's basically all worth getting D, with the possible exception of The Politics Of Time which is "odds n sods" (god i hate that term).

I watched a good portion of the dylan DVD, and last night i watched the fuck out the Devo DVD which I think Im going to buy for everyone as a Xmas present. Its just outstanding. Seriously, seriously outstanding.

Jackie said...

i went on my own music binge today by myself (i only spent $25 on 5 cd's) but still! it's something.

Richard said...

oh what did yuou get jackie?

Deanna said...

Well, i heard of her cuz shes been a tabloid sensation in england for several years. like that guy from that band. you know, that one guy. anyway, i was watching music videos of all the pete bjorn tapes n tapes regina spektor ilk and they played her single, and i thought it was pretty good. ive heard another song that was alright. i mentioned her on here. And umm thats about it. that one song is really good. at some point i might more by her.

Mr Bigpants Cock (of the) Walk said...

she reminds me of all those wainwright people except hot.

Mr Bigpants Cock (of the) Walk said...

except when she's partaking in bulimia.

Jackie said...

too thin and too much makeup.

but i like the songs of hers ive heard. but i'm not jumping for joy either.

Richard said...

Yeah the make-up is nasty.

I think i was kinda amazed i heard a popular song that i liked. that hasnt happened since...lets see...prince released Kiss in 1986...so you get the idea.

D said...

Eye-eye, cap'n. To the trenches I go!

D said...

Winehouse is size 8, according to Wikipedia. Which makes her smaller than the average woman but larger than most of your typical waif popular singers. Not that that means much, just that she's got some people mad Photoshopping behind the scenes or something. And someone get that bitch a new stylist, pronto.

Jackie said...

if she ain't beth ditto, i don't really care.

I know you don't, Jackie. You must follow your heart. That's why my boyfriend looks vaguely like Carrie Brownstein.

Mr Bigpants Cock (of the) Walk said...

Richard said...

yeah i only dated vanessa cuz i thought she'd become jim morrison. When she didnt after the agreed upun 6 weeks, Sal gave her the ol' push down the stairs. Oh dont look at me like that, "push down the stairs" is persian slang for cutting off someone's toes.

Well, I am near sighted with a cataract on one eye, so I'm off to a good start.

Mirah is playing with that fucking overintellectualizing Wilco-label-sharing cunt Laura Viers. Greeeeeeeaaaaaaat. For once in my life, I hope Mirah's the opener.

I got an e-mail yesterday from the Music Box about a film showing with live accompaniment and Crispin Glover narrating. It's called Brand on the Brain and it runs from May 18-20. Y'all might have gotten the same e-mail, but I thought I'd pass word along anyway.

sherman lexie will be reading/talking at 7pm. rich said he's going so i will have to wait for him to get home before i can leave. and i've been trying to get him to read his books for years so i'm not gonna tell him to stay home. so if you don't want to wait for us i understand, but it would be way cool if you could! i'll take you guys to my pie or something afterwards if you want! or maybe that mexican place in oak park you were telling me about, or even edwardo's (am i spelling that right?). i'll be home all day on friday so just call me.

I'm sure I can find some way to occupy myself downtown for two hours. I'll bring a change of clothes, I can't look like a corporate stiff in front of y'all.

I've decided that the word "bowser" is underused.

what the hell does bowser mean? Unless yr talkin about the fuckin GENIUS John "Bowser" Bowman. What the fuck ever happened to John "Bowser" Bowman? I cant find anything on the web. I interrupted typing this to check.

"Happy Hero" by Negativland
If I got shot
I bet the press would pick it up
You'd like me all a lot
If I got beat

When camera's rolled you'd see me lying bloody in the street
If a crazy stalker stabbed me or if down the stairs I fell
My room would fill with flowers,
And with cards to wish me well.

And I'd be your happy hero 'cause you'd heard my catchy song
And after being ripped apart, I could do no harm.
I know that I've done nothing that a coward wouldn't do
But even I might see things different, after listening to you

I'd be so hot, yeah,
For the sale-price of a press release
Success can still be bought
I'd sit so tall

They'd pluck me in a wheelchair and they'd push me down the hall
I'd play a song for dying kids, your eyes would start to tear
That would be the ticket, to bolster my career

And I'd be your happy hero and I'd sell another song
And after viewing my big heart, you'd have me going strong
I'd play a gentle lover in a movie for T.V.
So I deserve your pity, when my wife divorces me

If someone told, no,
Accused me of fucking teen-aged boys and beating others cold
You'd side with me!
And enough of your would doubt it, which would likely set me free
You'd say I didn't do it and that anyone could tell,
'cause he's smooth and smart and pretty
And he reads his lines so well

And to be your happy hero
I'd just sing another verse
The more I sing,
The more you would relieve me from my curse
Release me from your consciousness
As I bring down the floor
Selling Pepsi from the stage,
You yell and scream for more

More, more damnit! More!

According to dictionary.com, bowser refers to a gas pump in New Zealand, of all things. For some reason I'm remembering it being the name of the villain from the Super Mario Bros. games...

Richard said...

but that doesnt answer the BURNING question about the fate of John "Bowser" Bowman

D said...

No it doesn't, and I'm sorry I don't know. Not even Wikipedia knows.

Today is stupid. I'm starting to wonder how feasible it would be to take tomorrow off...

Richard said...
