Interview Quesions- Series 1

PLEASE ANSWER HONESTLY AND COMPLETELY TO THE BEST OF YOUR ABILITY:

When have you been a victim of hype? Is there even such a thing as a victim of hype? Why do you think you allowed yourself to be hyped? Do you mostly get hype from the advertisements or the spaces between the ads (the articles or the television program)? Are there forms of hype you take mroe seriously than others, and if so, why? And finally, what if any place does an individual's sense of sentiamentality have to do with hype?

When have you been a victim of hype?
A few times. Most recent being when I bought that Harp-playing chick's records and tried my damndest to like them.

Is there even such a thing as a victim of hype?
Yes, that description applies to anyone who still follows a certain website.

Why do you think you allowed yourself to be hyped?
Because of a particular sense of obligation to the types of music and performers I care about most. In the early '00s I got hyped out from feeling like I should like some of the crummier femme bands like the Need and the Butchies, even though they really sucked. On occasion I might read a description or hear something from someone whose judgment I trust, and come away wondering who's really got the bad taste, them or me. The effect of this whole homogenization of taste amongst the "cool" kids has been lessened greatly on me in recent months, though. Now I just download something before I buy it, which has taken most of the fun out of discovering new bands.

Do you mostly get hype from the advertisements or the spaces between the ads (the articles or the television program)?
The articles. I don't watch TV, and Firefox has this nifty little thing that blocks ads.

Are there forms of hype you take mroe seriously than others, and if so, why?
These days...I'll buy something only if I've heard and somewhat absorbed it first, unless it came out more than 10 years ago. I can't check out new bands based solely on hype anymore. I don't have the time, the money, or the emotional resolve anymore.

And finally, what if any place does an individual's sense of sentiamentality have to do with hype?
Well, especially if you've had anything to do with independent music in the last two decades, you used to be able to rely on word of mouth to find really amazing music. Now you can't even do that. When even Tiny Mix Tapes falls for hype on occasion (see: the MIA review), you can't trust anyone but your own ears. Then again, most of the "underground" stuff that's getting all the attention is pure cliched drivel anyway, and it makes me think that people are sticking their Q-tips too deeply (or not deeply enough) into their inner ears.

I think the very basic reason anyone falls victim to hype is the solitary confinement of the human experience. No matter how many ideas, interests, customs, passions etc are shared by two or more people, an individual is essentially the sole inhabitant of his/her consciousness. To some (or maybe all), this concept is inconceivable and it sends an eternal damaging bolt of lightning through the subconcious...terror and paranoia stricken people see the hole and try to fill it in a number of ways. One way is participating in a thing/event blown out of proportion by the media (for personal gain) and the general population who have already been pierced by said thing/event. The invigorating sense of suddeness that accompanies hype seems to shut peoples reasoning skills off. As if this is the thing, the one element necessary for us all to commune.

I was at a wedding two weeks ago and some chick spent fifteen minutes trying to talk me into reading harry fuckin potter. One of her points to her argument was, "How can you not be curious about these books??? everyones reading them and talking about them. THEY MUST BE AMAZING!" Yeah, I said, its a bunch of hype.

(Amongst other things.............)

i copy/pasted this from eli roth's myspace, but you should vote! we all love david lynch!:

Hey Everyone,

David Lynch asked me to pass along a message to my fans. His organization for world peace through meditation, The David Lynch Foundation, has been nominated for a myspace Impact Award in the category of Community Building. Winning this award would be a huge boost to the organization and would get it a lot of attention with people who might not even know it exists.

Voting's really easy. Just go here and click on under the white button that says "The David Lynch Foundation."

http://www.myspace.com/impactawards

The voting ends Friday so there's not much time. To learn more about The David Lynch Foundation, check out their page here:

http://www.myspace.com/davidlynchfoundation

David wanted to say thank you to all the fans for taking the time to do this. If you know other people with pages who can help, spread the word! It's a great cause.

Thanks for listening...

Eli
