I don't want to post this on the main page...but one of my exes (you know, one of the few cool ones) was just diagnosed with a really rare form of brain stem cancer, and it's virtually inoperable. I looked it up, and the average life span after diagnosis is 5-6 years. It's sad, because he's one of the most talented people I've ever met, even though he never created anything up to his full potential. We really bonded after my discovering Hole in 8th grade, and I'm pretty sure he tried getting me into Bikini Kill and all sorts of other cool stuff that I love now way back then (but I wasn't so ready for it and had to find it on my own, I guess--dude was at that point a rabid Nirvana obsessive and took everything Cobain said about the music he loved as gospel). We weren't super friendly in high school (at least, not until he started dating one of my best friends and we were kinda forced to make up), but his band did play a fundraiser I organized in college, expecting nothing in return, at the height of their regional popularity. (No shit, people in the audience drove HOURS to see them play that night. It was weird.)

He's in very good spirits despite the grim prognosis. He's waiting to hit his max with his insurance; after that, I'm going to organize at least one fundraiser to help him and his wife with the medical expenses. I will of course keep y'all in the know about it.

Despite so many things that have happened, he's always been a really cool, open person, and he'd do anything for anyone if they just hinted. I'm still pretty shellshocked by the news. Fucking awful.

wow, deanna, that is some icky shit! Life can be so fucking bizarre. You have to wake up in the morning and start the day full of joy and gratitude that yr not in pain(--if one is so inclined not to be in pain on that given day) cuz, as we keep learning in life, evidently it's a gift. I hope yr friend can find the strength to maintain his strong will, good spirit and a sharp eye while the stupid fucking numbers game tries to work against him. It sounds like he's got all the mental tools that he's gonna need for this!! hugs to y'all!
